Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has accused the previous government’s fish price hike of leading to bankruptcy and debt for small and medium-sized businesses producing fish products.
He said this while speaking at the parliament today.
Minister Shiyam said that there are always complaints that governments have neglected small and medium enterprises producing seafood products.
The Minister further said that while the companies were in this situation, the previous government had hiked the price of fish from MVR 17 to MVR 25 and that the businesses further deteriorated.
He said that as a result small and medium businesses as well as private companies went close to bankruptcy.
The Minister said that after the current administration took over, they had revised the fish prices as per the global markets and now those businesses that make fish products can easily purchase raw fish.
The government revised the fish price last June and said that the prices would be subject to a weekly review.
