Maldives Ports Limited MPL confirmed that it cleared more than 4,000 sacks of onions as the country faces a shortage of one of its most used perishable items.

The weather has caused difficulties in receiving shipments of onions, and many shops in Male' city have run out of onions. Onion prices have risen sharply.

Some shops are selling onions at MVR 35 per kg, while others are selling them at MVR 35 per kg, and some shops are even selling onions for MVR 75 per kg.

Noting that it had faced difficulties in unloading perishables due to the bad weather, MPL said that it had managed to unload goods from 3 cargo ships yesterday.

It said this included 4,720 sacks of onions.

MPL also stated that it would continue to unload goods from cargo ships that arrived yesterday, and these include 3,840 sacks of onions.

The State Trading Organization STO is also working to bring in a shipment of onions to solve the shortage of onions in the market. It said that a shipment of onions will be launched soon
