The army, Maldives National Defence Force MNDF announces that it has launched a joint operation over the bad weather warning issued by Maldives Meteorological Services yesterday.

The Met Office warned that the Maldives will face an adverse weather episode from 13 January onwards.

In a weather news brief today, the Met Office said that cyclonic circulation currently located far east of Maldives in southwest Bay of Bengal, is likely to move westwards.

It said that this system is expected to cause the formation of intense convective clouds over the Maldives.

The Met Office said that as a result rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms will be experienced over a fairly widespread area of the country from 13th January to 18th January.

Today, MNDF said that the joint operation was launched to take precautionary measures and to help minimize damages to the citizens.

It also said that relevant agencies would join MNDF in the operation and that the joint operation center has already been established.

MNDF did not reveal where the center was established and the exact scope of the operation.
