The High Court has ruled that the lower magistrate court acted wrongly when it ordered the release of the local teacher who had been accused of grooming his students.

The case was reported to the Police on the 17th of October. Police said the male teacher from a school in one of the central Atolls had been accused of speaking inappropriately to students and grooming them.

They also said the 29-year-old teacher was arrested on October 27 under a court order. The suspect was remanded in custody several times before being released in December.

The prosecution appealed against the order of a magistrate court of an island in the central Atoll in the High Court which ruled yesterday that child molesters are a threat to the safety of society.

A three-judge bench unanimously reversed the decision of the magistrate court, despite no previous allegation, to protect other children, and because police could rely on documents submitted that the accused teacher had an unsafe lifestyle.

The High Court also ordered law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect for 7 days till further decisions are made.
