A boat en route to Male' from Shaviyani Vangaafaru has run aground on the Noonu Lofaru reef.
Maldives National Defence Force MNDF said that the board ran aground on the reef with 10 aboard. It said that the boat was named 'Nasfaru'.
It also said that its Northern Area Command, Coast Guard First Squadron is on duty to assist the boat which had been taking on water after it crashed into the reef.
MNDF did not reveal any more information about the incident.
Boats and vessels run aground on reefs frequently in the Maldivian waters which are rife with shallow areas and rocky reefs, especially near islands.
Seafarers usually use navigation software to avoid reefs.
