Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdullah Muththalib says one of the key aspects of the Villimale road development project was to preserve the greenery of the island.
Earlier this month the government signed a contract with Road Development Corporation RDC to conduct the necessary survey of Villimale before its road reconstruction project.
But members of the public as well as NGOs have voiced concerns saying that such a development project could leave the much-green island with severe deforestation.
However, Minister Muththalib assured today that the government is conducting stakeholder consultations before making any design decision. He said that the government will conduct more consultations after making initial designs.
The Minister said that the project aims to make Villimalé roads safer and more accessible. He added that preserving the greenery of Villimalé roads is a critical aspect of the project.
