Maldives Democratic Party MDP says the party did not come to an agreement with the newly formed Democrats which was founded by ex-members of MDP earlier this year.

MDP said this after Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, who also joined the Democrats, claimed that the Democrats agreed to remain neutral in the second round of the Presidential Election after MDP agreed to cooperate in system change work initiated by the Democrats.

In response, MDP said that the Democrats proposed MDP to support holding the public referendum on the system change before the 30th of September and then it would support the MDP Candidate in the 2nd round of the Presidential Election.

MDP further said that it had notified the Democrats that it could not accept these conditions. It also said that the Democrats' decision to remain neutral in the second round of the election had nothing to do with any agreement with MDP.

While MDP went on to lose the Presidential Election to the PPM/PNC coalition, the Democrats have said that it intends to hold talks with PPM/PNC in a bid to play a role in the new government.

Also, the Elections Commissioned informed the Parliament today that it cannot logistically hold the public referendum this month with several arrangements yet to be made for a nationwide vote.
