The Maldives National Defence Force, MNDF, has warned seafarers after the popular shipwreck near Vaavu Atoll, Keyodhoo, detached from the reef and started floating northward inside the Atoll.

MNDF said the shipwreck is headed towards the 'Alihuras Kandu' after crossing Vaavu Atoll. It said that seafarers using the waters surrounding the area must be wary of the huge shipwreck.

Those traveling through the area at night are advised to pay special attention.

The picturesque shipwreck first floated into Maldivian waters about 10 years ago and was formerly a ship from the neighbouring Sri Lanka.

Back then MNDF had cleared it after checking for weapons and several attempts were made to move it from one place to another.

Popular among local and tourists as a diving spot and photography location, the shipwreck sustained damages in the moonsoon rains the country experienced back in January.
