More than 1,700 people have signed the online petition calling for the impeachment of the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and Vice Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah.

The petition titled '#ImpeachNasheed was put up on the popular petition site change.org by the user account under the name of 'Dhivehi Raaje'.

It read that the former president and current speaker of parliament Mohamed Nasheed has been continuously mocking the Maldivian people by challenging our social and Islamic values.

It said that today he defends immorality and is trying to bring down the whole country.

The petition called upon all members of parliament to Impeach the speaker Mohamed Nasheed and the Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

A total of 1,764 people have now signed the virtual petition and this could prompt a motion to begin the impeach process through the parliament.

The petition against Nasheed came after he made serious allegations against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih claiming that he had incriminating evidence of President Solih having an affair with a local girl.

Nasheed's 'outburst' against his long-term friend followed the arrest of his brother on charges of having same-sex relations with a migrant.
