Health Protection Agency HPA confirms that the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has now surpassed 20,000.
HPA said in a tweet that 165 new cases were confirmed from the whole country today and that 132 out of the 165 cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area where authorities have imposed both a vehicular ban and a curfew in an attempt to deter the rampant infection.
The agency said that 19 new cases were confirmed from operational resorts while 13 COVID-19 cases were reported from inhabited islands. HPA also reported 1 new COVID-19 case from an industrial island.
The new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the country to a staggering 20,144.
HPA confirmed that 17,470 had recovered from the illness while 2,605 remained as active cases. The Agency said that 186 COVID-19 patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.
The Maldives has recorded 62 COVID-19 deaths with 10 deaths coming last month.
The 62 who have succumbed to the fast-spreading illness include 55 locals and 7 foreigners.
Authorities have been tightening the restrictive measures taken against the pandemic with most of the measures being implemented in the Greater Male' Area.
This includes ordering the closure of restaurants and cafes' for dine-in from 8:00 pm while also ordering mosques to maintain social distancing during congregational prayers.
