The Parliament has approved the appointment of former Supreme Court Judge Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice of the Maldives.

His approval comes a day after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recommended his name for the post to the Parliament following the advice from the Judicial Service Commission JSC.

Former Chief Judge of the High Court, Shujau Usman, and the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdullah Mohamed, have also applied for the vacant post of Chief Justice.

Judge Ghani received a 'Highly Recommended' from the JSC after their interviews with all three applicants, which is why the President proposed his name.

At today's session, 62 MPs voted in favour of appointing Ghanee as the new Chief Justice, while no MP opposed his appointment.

Judge Ghanee worked in the judiciary for many years and was a civil court judge, then Chief Justice of the High Court, and later a Supreme Court judge. Gani was also the former JSC chairman.

The post of Chief Justice became vacant after the retirement of former Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan last month. Therefore, the administration of the Supreme Court has been temporarily handed over to Justice Abdullah Hameed.
