Health Protection Agency HPA says the number of Bangladeshi nationals who have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives has surpassed 500.

HPA said with yesterday’s positive cases a total of 506 Bangladeshis have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives.

Most of these are migrant workers living in congested housing quarters.

Last month the National Emergency Operations Center NEOC had said that it had identified 23 such congested living quarters housing some 1085 expatriate workers, mostly Bangladeshis, and had placed these places under monitoring. Earlier this month, the NEOC said that 10 more places have been placed under monitoring, and samples have been taken from 30 of these congested living quarters.

The Foreign Ministry and Economic Ministry are working to send back 1500 undocumented workers with the help of the Bangladeshi government and the government has made plans to send some 300 Bangladeshis back in the coming week.

Meanwhile, the total number of locals infected with Covid-19 virus has now reached 316.

98 Indians, 11 Nepalese, 11 Italians, 6 Sri Lankans, and 3 Pakistanis have also been tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives.
