Islamic Ministry has begun distributing the 50 tons of dates donated by Saudi Arabia with Ramadan set to begin on Friday.
Speaking on the distribution of the dates, Director General at Islamic Ministry said the ministry would prioritize disadvantaged households when distributing the donations.
The official said after that as only one packet of dates would be allocated for three households, the dates would be given away on first come first serve basis.
Ministry official said in Male’ and Villimale the city council would be spearheading the distribution while in Hulhumale Development Corporation HDC would be in charge of distributions there.
The official also said work to send the dates to atolls were underway and that the ministry was coordinating with island councils on the matter.
Saudi Arabia traditionally donates dates to Maldives each year for Ramadan. This year it donated 50 tons of dates including 25000 packets of dates each containing 2kgs of the fruit.
Ramadan preparations in Maldives have taken a backseat this year, with the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
