Official Spokesperson on Covid-19 updates Mohamed Mabrouk Azeez has made a compassionate plea to those stranded abroad amid the Covid-19 crisis by urging them to help those most in need to fly back home first.

Addressing reporters at Dharubaaruge, Mabrouk said while the government was working hard to bring back Maldivians living abroad because of the current global pandemic, those who are not in need of a desperate lift home should just stay put.

Mabrouk said with airports being the most infected areas in any country, there is no greater danger than using airports.

He added that if those abroad have comfortable and adequate means of stay, they should remain where they are now.

Meanwhile, Mabrouk said a rescue flight to India would fly back locals who travelled to the country through National Health Scheme Aasandha tomorrow. He said 152 Maldivians are expected to catch the flight home that would include patients and their guardians.

Mabrouk also clarified that government was having discussion on chartering a rescue flight to Bangladesh to pickup the Maldivians stranded in the country.

The official spokesperson highlighted that Maldives is the only country, which is carrying out repatriation for its citizens on such a large scale, and that the government’s efforts remain resolute.
