Police have responded to criticism aimed at them after a suspect in a rape case in Thaa Madifushi took his own life.
The rape case was reported to Police on the 23rd of this month and that the accused is a 65-year-old man living on the island.
The accused took his own life yesterday, and protests have been staged in Madifushi over the death of the accused. Those at the protest said that the Police had seen the accused walk around with a rope and that they failed to act.
In response, Police said that once they received the report of the accused walking around with a rope, officers had attended to the scene.
They said that the officers questioned the man and that the man did not appear in a state of mind in which he would harm himself.
Police added that they were further investigating the case.
