The government has signed a contract with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company MTCC to launch the government's taxi line.

At a ceremony held today, the contract was signed between the Transport Ministry and MTCC. Director General Ahmed Shameem from the Ministry signed on behalf of the government while MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudi signed on behalf of the company.

The Ministry noted that one of the reasons for the government-initiated taxi line was to solve the market gaps in the public transport system in the Greater Male' Area.

It said that the new service will ensure that customers can enjoy modern and safe taxi rides. It further said that the service would open unique opportunities to local drivers who can work full-time and part-time.

The Ministry assured that the new taxi line would not interfere with the income base for current local drivers but would offer job opportunities to those who drive taxis as a second job.

It also said that the taxi line would be launched in three phases and that the first phase would be launched this year in Male', Hulhumale' and Velaana International Airport.
