The main opposition party, the Maldives Democratic Party MDP has submitted a no-confidence motion against the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan.

The motion was submitted to the parliament with the signatures of 12 MPs from MDP.

The motion against the Minister notes several serious accusations against him. In a broad statement, the motion states that the Minister has acted in a manner a Cabinet Minister should never act.

It said a local company had set up an online expat system for use by immigration to manage the affairs of foreign workers in the country. Still, it was prevented from doing so and handed over to a black-listed Malaysian company called Bestinet.

While it could have been done cost-effectively through the local system that developed the system, entrusting it to Bastinet to operate it is acting in a manner that detracts from a benefit to the state and is a criminal offense under Section 517 of the Penal Code.

At the same time, the MDP said the minister, as the minister responsible for the police, was exerting political influence on the investigations being conducted by the service and was obstructing the investigation of criminal activities by the government.

MDP also accuses the Minister of abusing his authority over the Department of National Registry DNR to use personal information of many individuals to register them to the ruling PNC without their knowledge.
