An oil tanker from Fuel Supply Maldives FSM has run aground on the northwest reef of Gaafu Alifu Nilandhoo.

Speaking to 'the Press', President of the Nilandhoo Council Ibrahim Nasih said that it was unclear why the oil tanker crashed onto the reef.

He cited the tanker's crew to report that the vessel did not sustain any damage during the crash. He also said that another vessel from FSM was traveling to the crashed tanker to assist.

The President of the Nilandhoo Council further said that the relevant authorities had been informed as soon as the council was notified of the crash.

He noted that officials are monitoring the vessel to see if there is any oil leakage from the tanker into the ocean and will also study the damage to the reef because of the crash.

The oil tanker from FSM supplies to the islands within the atoll.
