Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan says the government plans to build a central jail on Uthuruthila falhu as part of its efforts to improve the prisons in the country.

Speaking to reporters, the Minister said when this government came into power, it did an assessment of the prisons and found most of them lacking.

Minister Ihusan revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to build a central prison and that this prison would be built on Uthuruthila falhu.

He said 30 hectares of land has been allocated for the jail, and a separate jail will be established there and the facility will be brought into operation within three years.

Ihsan said the existing prisons are working to provide maximum services using maximum resources. The Minister noted that one of the biggest concerns in the prisons is the provision of mental health treatment.

Minister Ihusan clarified that prisons provide psychiatric services and that the Health Ministry is working to improve mental health services given at Maafushi and Himmafushi Health Centers.

He added the improvement of the services of the two centers will improve the health services provided to the prisoners
