The Spokesperson for the Maldives Police Service Ahmed Shifan says Police have recovered more than MVR 2 million from scam cases this year.
In a post on 'X' Shifan who is also the Assistant Commissioner of Police said in the first 8 months of this year, the Police have recovered MVR 2.2 million from scam cases.
Shifan also lamented that it's unfortunate that many people continue to be vulnerable to scammers and fall victim to their schemes.
Maldivians are falling victim to a range of scams. This includes scams after the victims' social media accounts were hacked or cases in which victims were scammed during foreign currency transactions.
Scammers are also providing invalid bank slips during online goods sale transactions.
Police have also set up a 'scam center' to reduce the number of victims of scams. The center has been set up based on practices in other countries around the world and the Maldives is currently adapting the system adopted in Singapore.
