Immigration says it has arrested more than 5 illegal migrants after raids on spas and saloons in the Greater Male Area.

It said a special inspection was conducted yesterday to ensure that foreigners working in salons and spas in the Male' area are living in the Maldives as per the Immigration Act.

Immigration stated that 22 such places were searched in yesterday's operation. It also said that 7 foreign women were arrested because of their immigration status.

Immigration further said that notices were issued to 7 employers for employing illegal expatriates. It said that officers from the Police intelligence department took part in yesterday's operations.

Immigration has been teaming up with Police to conduct raids and searches on businesses that employ migrant workers to ensure that they are legal and documented.

Authorities are also inspecting places where foreigners are known to make food items to sell to their community and locals. Some of the places that have been raided showed highly unhygienic conditions.
