Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has denied allegations that he bribed the Supreme Court Judges back in 2018.

The allegations were made by his brother and former President Abdullah Yameen, who said in an interview that Maumoon was arrested in February 2018 because he had bribed the judges of the top court after the Court issued an order.

Yameen further alleged that Maumoon denied having a mobile phone when the Police asked him to hand over his phone during their investigation into the alleged bribery.

He also alleged that Maumoon's son, Faris, was also involved in the crime and that they acquired the funds for the crime from former MP Abdullah Jabir.

In response, the office of Maumoon stated that the Supreme Court order issued in February 2018 had nothing to do with Maumoon.

The statement also said that the former President has never paid any bribe or otherwise to any judge of any court or any other person in charge of public affairs.

It also said that spreading such lies was a shameful act by a person who was the President of the Maldives.
