Police say the autopsy report of Adam Athuhar, who died in police custody, succumbed to the injuries he sustained when he attempted to take his own life in his prison cell.
Athuhar was taken under police custody earlier this month after he held his girlfriend hostage with a knife to her neck. Police intervened to free the woman from his hold before violently tackling him to the ground.
Video footage shot by bystanders showed Police officers strike the suspect several times before he was subdued and disarmed. He was then treated at two separate hospitals before being released to police custody.
Police then reported that the suspect was found hanging in his holding cell and that he was rushed to the hospital for treatment on the 2nd of this month. Athuhar succumbed to his injuries the next day.
The suspect's body was taken abroad for the autopsy on the 5th of this month.
Police said today at a news conference that they have received his autopsy report and that it showed that the suspect died because of the injuries he sustained while attempting to take his own life in his cell.
Police did not reveal any more information about the case.
Police said they could not share further information as the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission are investigating the case.
