Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihsan says it is the government's policy to deduct one day from the jail sentence for every day that prisoners spend studying or working in jail.

He made these remarks at the opening of 'Dhivehi Sagaafee Goathi' at Maafushi prison today.

The Minister said that Maldives Correctional Services will soon formulate rules to strengthen the laws and regulations that would allow such deductions and that these changes would be announced soon.

Minister Ihsan noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu wants inmates to get the required training to learn a profession and then re-enter society as soon as possible.

He further stated that the President wanted people to start reforms as soon as they enter jail, learn what they need to learn, and work for the development of Maldives as useful citizens.

The Minister said that he would arrange for the prisoners to sell their cultural work and other items to visitors.

Ihsan said he is working to find a place at the Vellana International Airport and will arrange for some of the profits to go to the prisoners.
