The Parliament's Judiciary Committee has approved a motion that seeks to dismiss Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem from his post.

The motion was approved at a hearing held behind closed doors today.

The Prosecutor General had attended the hearing earlier in which he answered questions from the Committee members. The PG had requested the Parliament to show the meeting live on TV but the meeting was closed off to the public.

The Parliament has yet to confirm whether the Committee had voted in favor of his dismissal. The motion to dismiss was submitted to the parliament by the MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency Mohamed Shahid.

Later on, the Prosecutor General met with members of the media to shed light on the accusations made in the motion. Shameem said that the accusations were nothing new and that he was being dismissed not because the state had lost faith in his ability to perform his duties.

Prosecutor General Shameem said when this administration came into power, he met with the leaders of major state agencies and had talks on policy changes and other relevant issues.

The Parliament session to decide his future as the Prosecutor General will be held later tonight.
