Authorities have remanded the suspect arrested for cutting and stealing cables connected to a transformer at a Stelco substation.

The substation was robbed last Tuesday which resulted in a power outage in the residential area which also housed Majeedhiya school.

Stelco's Managing Director reported suspects had attempted to cut another cable on the same day.

Police arrested a 32-year-old local man yesterday in connection with the theft. Police reported today that the suspect was taken to the criminal court for his remand hearing and that the court had remanded him in custody for 15 more days.

Police confirmed that they are further investigating the theft.

Stealing cables has grown unusually common in the capital Male' with thieves becoming more and more brazen after electric cables for the lights installed at the Republic Park for Eid celebrations were also stolen.
