Protesters demonstrating outside the MIFCO Fish processing factory in Hulhumeedhoo of Addu City have taken over the operations at the factory.

Fishermen have been protesting near the factory since Friday demanding that MIFCO make the overdue payments to the fishermen.

The protesters have been making it difficult for those working in the factory during their demonstration.

MIFCO said that the protesters broke into the employment canteen which was closed down yesterday due to the demonstrations and took food from the employees' supply.

The Company also said that the protesters had cut power lines to the employee accommodation block and they had to sleep outside on tarps last night and they have been unable to use the toilet due to the power cut.

Police asked the protesters not to do anything against the law and regulations as the protesters started damaging property and employees. Police said in a statement that the protest will be allowed to continue peacefully and within the legal framework.

About 100 workers help operate the Addu Fisheries Complex and MIFCO said that it would not hesitate to ensure the safety and protection of its employees.
