Police say three Somalis who were found stranded on an uninhabited island in Vaavu Atoll have been provided temporary shelter.

They said yesterday that the three Somalis were stranded on the island of Vavathi in Vaavu Atoll along with the dinghy they were traveling in.

Though the Police did not reveal any more information about the foreigners yesterday, Police said today that initial investigations confirmed that the three reached the uninhabited island as castaways and that they were left stranded on the island.

Police further also said that the three have now been taken to Holhudhoo and that they have been provided temporary shelter with the assistance of the island council.

Police did not give information about plans to repatriate the stranded Somalis.

Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia is the easternmost country in continental Africa. The country is on the Horn of Africa and is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest.

Somalis have been known to enter Maldivian waters in small sea vessels like Dinghys to migrate from their country or for criminal purposes.
