Maldives Meteorological Services, Met Office has issued an orange alert from Baa Atoll to Meemu Atoll.

The orange alert is the second-highest weather alert in the weather forecast system used in the Maldives with only the red alert ahead of it.

The Met Office said strong winds of 36-42 miles per hour are expected in the region between 17:30 to 20:30 today. The Met Office also said that gust winds could reach 60 miles per hour with very rough seas.

Earlier, the Met Office said due to the active southwest monsoon over the Maldives area, strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rain are expected in central and northern atolls.

Met Office said that a strong southwest monsoon is predicted to persist across the Maldives area for the next 3 days. It said that as a result strong winds ranging from 15 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour with gusts of 45-55 miles per hour are expected.

The Met Office further said that rough seas as well as possible swell waves during high tides and scattered rain are expected in central and northern Atolls for the next 3 days.

It advised seafarers to exercise caution during the next three days. It also advised the public to take the necessary measures to minimize the impact and damage due to strong winds and possible heavy rain.
