Police say they have launched an investigation into incidents where thieves have lured victims to an apartment in Hulhumale' Phase II where they have been robbed.
Police said the victims are being lured to the apartments differently and that they have now launched an investigation into the incidents. Police advised the public not to get lured by strangers and go with them to unknown places.
Several online users have posted details of such incidents and said that the targets of such incidents have been middle-aged or elderly men.
Social media activist Midhuam Saud shared that the latest incident was reported from an apartment in Phase II Hiya H5 flat. He said that a girl had started up a conversation with an older man before inviting him to her apartment.
He said that when the man arrived at the apartment, some men jumped him and locked him inside the apartment before stripping him naked and videoing him. Midhuam told that the perpetrators then blackmailed the man with the video before making him transfer money from his account and also steal all the possessions he had on him.
Midhuam said several such cases have been reported but many have not lodged complaints due to the nature of the incidents.
