Police have launched an investigation into allegations made against a police officer stating that the officer had blackmailed a student of Villa College.
A member of the public posted on 'X' accusing Police Inspector Ismail Rameez of blackmailing and extorting a nursing student from Villa College and questioned whether there was any official or agency that was willing to investigate the accusations.
Regarding the matter, Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan said the Police complaints investigation department is working to verify the information.
He also requested the public to submit complaints against any police officer directly to the police to investigate any such grievances further.
Blackmailing and scam cases have grown common in the Maldives with perpetrators using different social media platforms to lure and trap victims.
Police have been urging the public to remain vigilant about the different tactics used by blackmailers and scammers.
