The Managing Director of State Electric Company Ltd Stelco Hussain Fahmy says the electricity bills of households hike during the year's hottest time and the bills may get high next month too.

His comments came on the back of public concern and outrage over the high electricity bills issued for households this month.

Speaking on TVM's Raaje Miadhu program, Fahmy said Stelco did not do anything to make the bills high. Noting that recent days have been the hottest to the Maldives on record, the Managing Director of Stelco said electricity bills of households always get high during the hottest days of the year.

Stressing that the country's ambient temperature has increased, Fahmy said that as per the company's history pattern, the electricity bills for this month as well as the bills for next month are expected to be high.

Fahym noted that the bills can only be lowered by economizing electricity. He said that awareness campaigns should be carried out for the public to educate them on economizing electricity and that it should be a focus at the construction stage of the building.

The government has given a discount on the Ramadan bill, but many people have shared their concerns about the increase in the bill this month. Earlier, Fahmi said electricity bills are not only increasing in the Maldives but recently due to global warming and increased electricity consumption.
