Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan says the increased number of undocumented migrant workers poses a threat to the country's national Security.
He said this while speaking at the Parliament today in response to a question asked by the MP for South Henveiru Constituency, Hussain Shaheem.
MP Shaheem asked whether the government believed that the increased number of undocumented migrants was a crisis and whether the Minister thought that this was a threat to national security.
In response, Minister Ihusan said that he believed that illegal migrants are working in the country but that the authorities have been unable to determine the exact number of undocumented workers.
He further said that 135,149 active work permits had been issued to Bangladeshi nationals, and only 39,004 were valid. He said that the rest of the migrants were living in the country illegally as per the law.
The Minister explained that many of these individuals have left the country as per the border control system. He lamented local companies for their lack of communication with relevant authorities in the matters of missing migrant workers who are fired or who flee.
Minister Ihusan further said that the increased number of illegal migrant workers was a threat to national security and assured that the authorities were working to curb the issue within one year under a special task force designated for the matter.
