Local rescuers have saved 10 divers and 4 instructors who were swept away in the sea off Gaafu Dhaalu Gan.
Police said a marine police launch out on patrol in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll spotted a diver near Gaafu Dhaalu Gan. Police said that when their rescuers reached the area where the diver was spotted, they saw two more divers who reported that several other divers had been swept away in the strong current.
Police further said that marine police had rescued 10 divers and another 4 diving instructors who got swept away. While all the divers were Russian, three of the four instructors were locals.
The rescued individuals were taken to Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhoo on the marine police launch and Police confirmed that all 14 were alright.
Police also said that they contacted the safari vessel that took individuals on the diving excursion and handed them over to the safari vessels.
Such incidents are not common in the Maldives but the oceans in the south of the country are famous of its currents and swells.
