Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has said that the security details assigned to Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem were not with him when he was attacked by two assailants yesterday morning.
Police today said they had arrested two suspects who allegedly attacked the PG while he was out on his morning exercise routine. PG Shameem was attacked with a blunt object and suffered a fracture on his left arm.
Speaking to the media today, Commissioner Shujau said that when the attack happened the PG did not have his security details with him. The Commission noted that there are certain guidelines for providing and accepting security and that both sides should enforce these guidelines.
He said that currently the security forces only provide security for officials if there is a threat against them which comes up in the threat assessment. However, the Commissioner insisted that the Police are looking to move away from this practice and provide security to top officials for 24 hours.
Speaking at the same press conference, Head of Central Investigation Command Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Nafiz noted that Police and MNDF have worked together to maximize the security being given to the PG.
He also noted that security details assigned to the PG were not present during his attack because he did not want the security details and he had requested for it via a message.
