The main opposition party MDP has proposed an amendment to the Parliament that would disallow holding elections during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The amendment was submitted by the MP for Ihavandhoo Constituency Mohamed Shifau after discussions with the MDP Parliamentary Group.

This revision was proposed for Article 43 of the Elections Act. The Amendment stated that even if the act or any other act stipulates otherwise, elections should not be held during Ramadan.

It also said that if the Election date falls within Ramadan, the election must be held 10 days after the Holy Month concludes.

The amendment from MDP came weeks after the Elections Commission announced that it would be holding the next Parliamentary election on the 17th of March which is also the 6th day of Ramadan.

While many have voiced their concern for the decision, the Elections Commission requested the Parliament to bring changes to the law which would allow it to hold the Election after Ramadan. But the Parliament's Independent Institutions Commission decided not to act on these requests.
