MP for Villigilli Constituency Saud Hussain has confirmed that he has submitted a motion to the parliament urging it to investigate the transportation delay and subsequent death of a critically ill child from Gaafu Alifu Viligilli.

Mohamed Jaah Khalid, 13, died yesterday while under treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after his transportation from the Southern island to the capital Male' was due to technical issues with the chartered flight.

In his motion, MP Saud said that government agencies have been neglectful in attending to different emergencies across the Maldives including searching for missing vessels as well as transporting critically ill patients from the inner islands to Male'.

He said that such neglectful actions unfolded concerning the transportation of the critically ill Jaah who was admitted to the Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital on 17th of January.

The MP said that doctors had instructed government authorities to hasten his medical evacuation as he needed critical care available from Male' but that they delayed the transportation to wait for a chartered flight from Island Aviation instead of using MNDF emergency aircraft.

Saud said that previously in situations where Island Aviation flights are delayed, authorities have used MNDF emergency aircraft and that while the resources remained in service, this government has refused to use these services.

He urged the parliament to investigate why the emergency transportation was delayed and to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The emergency aircraft under MNDF have been donated by India and are being operated by Indian military personnal deployed in the Maldives.
