Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts Ibrahim Waheed (Asward) says his hope is for the Maldives to become a regional as well as a global IT hub in the future.
He made the remarks at a special function held by the Ministry to launch its policies under the government's 100-day milestone program 'Hafuthaa 14'.
The Minister said that these policies are the initial step to formulate the action plan designed to tackle the hurdles to empowering in technology and to find more opportunities for local youths in coding and other IT-related jobs.
Minister Asward said that this was a long-term action plan that would span five years and that the foundation to employ more women and youth in the technology sector.
He noted that under this plan, the government plans to train 500 individuals in 5 years and would start the training from Certificate level 3.
He said that then the government would work to implement courses for advanced certificate level, Diploma, and eventually up to Bachelor's Degree level.
The Minister highlighted that these courses would train the youths in a way that would enable them to work from an office as well as from home.
