MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohammed has said that discussions have been held with government agencies to increase the capacity of the pump station four times to solve the problem of flooding in the city.

Regarding the government’s efforts to address one of the age-old problems of the city, namely, flooding in the city’s streets, Matheen said he has initiated the process of doubling the existing storm water management system to address this problem.

The storm water system is installed in the north and south of the city. Matheen said water is collected from about 16 pump stations and 218 points in the south of the city, on Amenee Magu and Buruzu Magu and on Kanba Aisarani Magu and Shaheed Ali Road in the north. According to the capacity, 400 cubic meters of water can be withdrawn from each pump station within an hour, he said.

In addition, Matheen said the existing storm water system can draw about 5,000 cubic meters of water within an hour. However, the system was designed to drain the rainwater when it settles, he said, adding that the storm water system is now installed to dry the water within two hours.

Noting that the Infrastructure Ministry is working to address the flooding problem in the city, Matheen said the MWSC is mainly responsible for designing, maintaining and operations of the existing system.
