The Parliament's Government Oversight Committee has canceled its meeting scheduled for today to deliberate on giving parliamentary approval to the cabinet of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu due to the lack of a quorum.
The meeting was scheduled for 09:00 a.m today but the meeting can begin only with 4 MPs and matters can be put to vote with the presence of 6 MPs. Only 3 MPs attended today's meeting.
Parliamentary approval for the 22 cabinet ministers was placed on the agenda of the session held on the 18th of this month but a point of order from the MP for Thulhaadhoo Constituency Hisan Hussain highlighting the lack of ministry mandates delayed the vote on the cabinet.
She pointed out that the Constitution clearly states that the President must submit the mandates of the Ministries in the government for parliamentary approval and while it has been 30 days for the new government, the Parliament is yet to receive the mandate for the new ministries.
The MP argued that without deliberating on the mandates of the Ministries, it is unclear what capabilities the Ministers should have or not to fulfill what responsibilities.
After hearing the arguments on MP Hisan's point of order, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam announced that the Parliament would not move forward with the Committee report and sent it back for revision as per Article 200 of the Parliament Standing Order.
