The Parliament has delayed approving the 22 Ministers appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after putting the issue on the agenda for today's parliamentary session.
This comes after the MP for Thulhaadhoo Constituency Hisan Hussain posed questions about the lack of mandate from the Ministries ahead of the vote on approving the designated Ministers.
At the start of the session, MP Hisan took a point of order and said that the report on Ministers' approval compiled by the Government Oversight Committee was included in the session's agenda in violation of Article 200 of the Parliament standing order and that the report itself does not meet with the criteria listed in the Article.
She pointed out that the Constitution clearly states that the President must submit the mandates of the Ministries in the government for parliamentary approval and while it has been 30 days for the new government, the Parliament is yet to receive the mandate for the new ministries.
The MP argued that without deliberating on the mandates of the Ministries, it is unclear what capabilities the Ministers should have or not to fulfill what responsibilities.
After hearing the arguments on MP Hisan's point of order, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam announced that the Parliament would not move forward with the Committee report and sent it back for revision as per Article 200 of the Parliament Standing Order.
