Maldives Inland Revenue Authority MIRA has published lists of individuals and businesses who have failed to file or pay income taxes in 2022.

The list from MIRA indicates that a staggering 748 individuals and businesses failed to file their income tax statements with MIRA last year. This is more than 452 individuals and businesses that had failed to file their income taxes in 2021 as that year only 296 made it to this list.

The list identified the names of the taxpayers, their tin numbers, identity cards (if an individual), and business registration numbers (if a business) along with their addresses and business activities.

A separate list by the Inland Revenue Authority identified those who had not paid their income taxes in 2022. MIRA said that a total of 21 businesses failed to pay income taxes last year.

This is 9 businesses less than that were listed as non-payers of income taxes in 2021.

Income Tax is levied under the Income Tax Act (Law Number 25/2019). The act was published in the Government Gazette on 17 December 2019 and taxation under the act commenced on 1 January 2020. However, remuneration came within the purview of income effective 1 April 2020. The tax regimes imposed under the Business Profit Tax Act and Bank Profit Tax Act were repealed with the commencement of Income Tax.
