Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company MIFCO says a boat building code is vital to ensure the safety of the sailors and fishing vessels.

This comes after a fishing vessel from Gaafu Alifu Gemanafushi named 'Orchid 707' broke in half yesterday while out at sea. The boat was built just years ago.

MIFCO expressed concern about the incident and offered its condolences to the owner and the crew of the vessel.

The Company said that a boat building code is vital now to guarantee the safety of the vessels and for the protection of those who go out to sea in these vessels.

MIFCO noted that with time, the size of fishing vessels has increased and that these vessels stay out at sea for longer periods of time while also traveling further.

The 'Orchid 707' broke in half while it was traveling 25 miles north of Addu City. The 11ft vessel was carrying 10 Maldivians and 13 foreigners when it broke in half but no injuries were reported in the incident.
