The Parliament session scheduled for today has been canceled as the Deputy Speaker for the Parliament MP Eva Abdullah called in sick for the second consecutive day.
The Communications Director at the Parliament Hassan Ziyau said that MP Eva had informed the parliament that she was on sick leave and that the Parliament session had been cancelled.
Ziyau further said that the session was canceled by the Secretary General of the Parliament and that the session was canceled for the safety of the Secretary-General and the staff of the Parliament.
This comes after the Parliament session which was penned for yesterday was postponed to today after MP Eva called in sick. Parliament Standing Order dictates that only the Deputy Speaker can chair this session as a no-confidence resolution against the Speaker of the Parliament was on the agenda for the session.
The Deputy Speaker had revealed that she had been suffering a bout of Dengue Fever and assured that she would start attending the Parliament once she was well.
But chaos erupted at the Parliament yesterday when the Secretary-General of the Parliament Fathimath Niusha announced that the Parliament session cannot continue without the Deputy Speaker.
Angry MPs from MDP protested while standing in front of the desk of the Parliament Secretariate in the chamber and one MP appeared to attack the PC the Secretary-General was using and broke her handphone too.
