Maldives Democratic Party MDP says a Parliament Speaker who does not have the full backing of the legislative house should just resign from his post and that it was the most decent thing to do.

This comes after the Parliament put the no-confidence resolution submitted against Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on the agenda for the next Parliamentary session scheduled for next Sunday.

In a statement, MDP said today that the party condemns the Speaker's action to see that the resolution against him is not resolved at the parliament.

MDP said that the post of the Speaker can only be held with the support and backing of the Parliamentarians and that the person who has the post must be able to face the democratic standards and guidelines.

The Parliament Majority Party further said that a Speaker without the full backing of the Parliament should just resign from the post but what is being is seen is Nasheed flouting the rules of democracy.

Yesterday, the Party issued a three-line whip for its MPs ahead of the no-confidence vote against the Speaker. This is the second vote of no-confidence that the party had instigated against Nasheed having taken back their first motion in favour of getting his party The Democrat's support for the second round of the election back in September.

Despite the rescind, the Democrats remained neutral for the second round and MDP went on to concede the Presidency to the PPM/PNC Coalition whose candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu would become the 8th President of the Maldives.
