Police have launched an investigation into the alleged rape and impregnation of a minor on an island from the Southern Atolls.

Police said to 'The Press' that the incident was reported from one of the islands in the Southern Atolls of Gaafu Dhaalu, Gaafu Alifu, Fuvahmulh, and Addu City.

They said the rape was reported on the 6th of this month and that they have now launched an investigation into the alleged crime against the girl who is under 18 years of age.

Coincidently, the victim's mother had posted on social media details of the ordeal her daughter faced. The mother said that the people who raped and impregnated her daughter had also tried to abort the baby by giving the minor drugs and that they had talked to her about their actions.

The mother of the victim said that she reported the incident to Police then and there but she had not received any cooperation from the law enforcement agency.

She also said that she reported the incident to the Gender Minister but failed to receive their support too and went on to accuse the police of trying to sweep the incident under the rug.

When the outlet questioned the Police about the victim's mother's accusations, they reiterated that they were further investigating the incident and did not reveal any other information.
