A motion has been submitted to the parliament calling on the government to cease influencing the election process, fulfill the pledges it made to ensure the fairness of the election and clarify its policies on the matter.

The motion was submitted to the parliament by the MP for Maafannu North Constituency Imthiyaz Fahmy.

Speaking after submitting the motion, MP Imthiyaz said that holding fair and independent elections was one of the fundamental parts of democracy and that the right to vote and contest must be ensured by the government as per the constitution.

He said that while former administrations were accused of influencing electoral processes, this government came into power to allay public concerns on the matter and pledged to make sure the elections were fair and independent but this government too has been exerting influence on the electoral process.

MP Imthiyaz highlighted several points in the motion including;

  • Mixing official government work and campaign activities and misusing state tools
  • Using state resources and staff for campaigning on a large scale
  • Increasing political posts, forcing those at the posts to keep supporting President Solih and threatening to fire them from the job if otherwise
  • Threatening to stop projects if constituents did not vote for the President

Stating that such thing would damage the electoral process of the country, MP Imthiyaz called on the government to stop influencing the election and allow fair and independent elections to take place.
