The Maldives Monetary Authority has said that the country's tourism industry generated MVR 13.62 billion in revenue in the second quarter of this year.
According to the MMA, tourist bed nights increased by 3 percent in the second quarter. In addition to the increase in bed nights, the estimated revenue from transportation increased by 6 percent compared to the second quarter of last year.
The tourism industry generated USD 835.6 million in revenue in the second quarter of last year. However, the second quarter of this year saw a USD 47.8 million increase. So total revenue for the quarter was USD 883.4 million which accounts for MVR 13.62 billion in local currency.
The number of resorts operating increased to 170 in the second quarter of this year, according to the MMA. 169 resorts were in operation in the first quarter of this year compared to 164 in the second quarter of last year.
The industry's operational bed capacity increased by seven percent compared to the same period last year as the number of resorts increased in the second quarter. Resorts account for 68 percent of the total operational bed capacity, followed by guesthouses. That's 24 percent of the beds.
The total number of tourists arriving in Maldives reached 1.2 million at the end of the second quarter of this year. Russia topped the list of countries with the highest number of tourists, followed by India and China.
