PNC Presidential Candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu denies reports that say that he intends to take a fee from those using the Sinamale Bridge if he came into power.
The Sinamalé Bridge was built by former President Abdullah Yameen. It was opened when Muizzu was the Housing Minister. The bridge was opened in August 2018 ahead of the presidential election.
In a tweet, Muizzi says that it is irresponsible and uncivilized to spread false rumors that fees will be charged to the people who use the Sinamalé Bridge under his rule.
Although he now says he will not charge the people, when he was housing minister, Muizzu said he had entrusted a Chinese subsidiary of CCCC to design the system to collect fees from users.
The government continued to discuss a fee as it was not sustainable to continue the bridge without a fee.
The discussions were held in collaboration with the Housing Ministry, police, and the Transport Authority. However, the talks were postponed and the fee collection process was left to the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
