Former Thinadhoo Court Magistrate Ibrahim Rasheed has been sentenced to 15 years in jail and fined by the Criminal Court after he was arrested on drug trafficking charges.
Ibrahim Rashid, 40, was charged with dealing in diamorphine. He was charged after police found 0.0123 grams of diamorphine in a rubber packet he allegedly threw away when police went to his place on a tip-off that he was in possession of drugs. The Police searched his place back in May of 2016.
Ibrahim Rashid told the court that the packet found in the case was not his and that it was placed there to frame him. However, he has not submitted any evidence to prove it or to refute the evidence submitted by the prosecution.
When Defendant was found guilty, Ibrahim asked for the lightest sentence and a sentence to send him to the drug court for treatment.
However, cases of less than four grams of dimorphine are referred to treatment after self-confession of drug addiction. At no stage of the case did Ibrahim Rashid confess and request it. The court sentenced him to jail and a fine.
The Criminal Court sentenced him to 15 years in jail and fined him MVR 25,000.
